Red Dog Children's Museum received a 2023 Attraction Development Grant from Kansas Tourism. This grant helped kick off Phase I of our museum - our "Roaming" trailer with exhibits to hoof it around SW Kansas promoting.
GCC and CoBank provided a matching grant that funded a cross section of a grain elevator that children could move colored balls (grain) around to see how a working grain elevator operates.
FCCVIB provided a grant for our trailer signage and initial marketing materials.

+ Garfield Early Childhood Center
Garfield Early Childhood Center recently unveiled their new mascot. They are now the Little Buffaloes.
“The new mascot ties in with the school district better than the old mascot,” said Andrea Baker, Garfield Early Childhood Center Principal.
The old mascot was the Little Horns, which was a little cow with horns.
“Our students start out their educational journey at Garfield Early Childhood Center and will eventually finish their high school education at Garden City High School. It really ties in the whole school district because once a Buffalo, always a Buffalo,” Baker said.
Garfield Early Childhood Center houses the early childhood special education programs and the ELF (Early Learning for Four-year-olds) programs for the district. The school was created as a part of the same long-range facilities plan that gave the community the current high school, Horace Good Middle School and Abe Hubert Elementary School.
The history of the school itself is perhaps the most interesting of all the schools in the district, in that it has burned down twice.
It was originally Northside School, built in the 1880s. Little of note besides normal education happened there until 1900, when it burned down and was rebuilt. That school stood for the next 75 years until it burned down and rebuilt a second time.
The center is named for James A. Garfield, the 20th President of the United States. Garfield is remembered for proposing a universal education system funded from the federal level.

FCEDC provided RDCM which much needed guidance and assistance in our infancy.
Great Plains MakerSpace has helped RDCM with fabrication and other building resources for the creation of our exhibits.
Greg Hands was a fourth-generation farmer in the Plymell area who was a family man and a servant leader in the Garden City community, serving on the board of the Garden City Co-op for twelve years and in multiple roles at the First United Methodist Church. While attending college at KSU, he served as Vice-President of his Fraternity, Alpha Gamma Rho, and had been State President of the Future Farmers of America, a Farm Bureau member and a supporter of several other agricultural organizations. His family wished to give other children the opportunity to play "carpet farming" with a myriad of farm toys. "Grandpa Greg's Farm" will be joining the agricultural exhibit in memory of Greg Hands.
We are so grateful for the support of the communities we serve! Every dollar matters and helps facilitate a safe space for children and families to play, grow, and learn through exhibits, programming, and activities that provide young children a foundation for educational growth and community and cultural appreciation.
We sincerely appreciate all the help from the following people and organizations who have helped RDCM come to fruition!
